Close Encounters of the Australian Kind

By Joseph Richards

Right before I moved to Australia with my husband, who is Australian, I watched a television show about the ten most deadly creatures in the world. I looked right at my husband and joked, that, if all ten were from Australia I was not moving. Little did I know I was not far off. Nine out of the ten creatures were from Australia.

The first encounter I had was with a spider. It was late and I noticed a large shadow on the wall near the light switch. When I turned on the light the spider jumped at me, nearly missing, and ran away in the opposite direction. I later found out that it was a Huntsman spider, which are actually harmless and great to have in your home. These spiders eat blowies, blue bottle flies). I later found out that my medium size can of bug spray would not kill it, considering spraying a whole can on the spider would be useless.

Needless to say I am no better in the water .The slightest touch of something on my skin while in the sea sends me swimming faster than an Olympian even if it does turn out to be seaweed. I am not a strong swimmer so the currents terrify me , the knowledge of the fact that box- jelly fish AND killer sharks dwell in these waters petrifies me " so when Husband suggests a romantic sailing holiday in the Whitsundays , North Queensland , I have to admit to not being immediately keen but I agreed .

Although I was scared, I must admit, it was breathtaking. Turtles were swimming in the shallow water and dolphins followed us into the deeper parts. From then on I become more confident and started to swim in the water.

The water is crystal clear, until a dark shadow appeared be coming closer. I ran so fast and was screaming so loud, only for my husband to point out, laughing, that I was not running from a shark but a clown fish. The size of a dinner plate, in my defense.

Las Vegas Myths

By Chris Linch

Las Vegas, Nevada is a place that's larger than life. When one thinks of Vegas, they think of gambling casinos, strip joints, showgirls and huge luxurious hotels with flashing lights and dancing waters. What they usually don't realize is that this atmosphere is contained to the Las Vegas Strip. The "Strip" is just one section of Las Vegas, not the entire city.

What people don't stop to think about is that Las Vegas is simply a town just like any other. They have schools, government offices, grocery stores, parks, all the normal features that every single town in America has. If one were to visit Las Vegas and venture off of the strip, they'd find a town with normal people going about their everyday business.

It's said that prostitution is legal in Las Vegas. This is probably a popular notion due to the exhibitionist nature of the town with all the shows featuring nude showgirls. Vegas is also famous for their quickie wedding chapels and thousands of hotels. Go into any casino and you'll find beautiful women in sexy clothes. Nevertheless this is all part of the Vegas image. Prostitution is illegal and people do get arrested for solicitation in Vegas.

The Hoover Dam is a huge construction that took five years to build and used four million plus cubic yards of concrete. It was a massive feat of engineering. During the building of this dam almost a hundred workers lost their lives. The rumor circulating is that some of their bodies remain buried in the concrete still. The truth is, the concrete was poured in small increments and allowed to dry before pouring the next batch. If anyone were to have fallen into the wet concrete, they would have been easily pulled out.

Due to the idea of Las Vegas being all casinos, hotels and shows, people tend to get the idea that every Vegas resident lives and works on the strip. Women here are all strippers and gorgeous. In actually, this couldn't be further than the truth. While many of the residents may have jobs on the strip, they clock in and out and go home to their normal subdivisions in surrounding areas. Still others hold down jobs in schools, grocery stores and government offices and may rarely venture onto the strip. The women living here are normal looking just like the women in any other American town.

Once a woman who won a huge jackpot at the "Megabucks" slot machine experienced a tragic accident mere weeks after her winning and became paralyzed. Since that time a rumor has circulated that everyone who won a major jackpot at the Megabucks slot machines encountered a tragedy of sorts immediately afterwards. Even though the winners are alive and happy today, the rumors persist that they have died or have experienced some horrible incident.

Another myth includes bodies being found in a hotel's box springs. There's no proof or evidence that this ever happened in Las Vegas. It did, in fact, happen in some small town over on the east coast of the US. Somehow this incident ended up in Las Vegas as the rumor circulated.

As incredulous as this sounds, there's even a rumor that kidneys get stolen in Vegas. Apparently someone started a story of a man who awakened in a hotel room one morning to a note that advised him to call 911 or else he would experience dire circumstances. The man supposedly did so only to be told by the doctors that he was missing a kidney.

Las Vegas is quite a colorful place with a crazy present and an even more raucous past. One can be sure to hear some interesting tales about this city. Just remember to take everything you hear about Las Vegas with a little bit of caution and amusement and know that outside of the Strip, Vegas is just a normal town with ordinary people going about their business.

A Baker's Dozen of Travel Tips to Save Money on Travel

By Chris Linch

1. Be flexible. Alternate either the airport/city or the time/date you plan to travel. A rigid travel schedule is going to make it hard to save money on travel.

2. Ask for discounts or upgrades. Don't accept the hotel rate as written in stone. Often all that is required is simply to ask for a discount or ask to be upgraded to a better room. Same goes for the airplane, ask for an upgrade. If you don't ask you'll never know what you might have been able to get.

3. Remember your AAA card and always ask if there is a discount.

4. Plan your vacation in the off season. For example, if you want to go on a ski trip, plan one for the summer. You will find the resorts charging quite a bit less, and it will be less crowded.

5. When purchasing your airline tickets, don't only look for round-trip tickets but also check the one-way fares. Even if you have to travel on different airlines, use whatever means possible to get the best deal.

6. If you are going to a theme park and planning to be there for more than a few days, opt for an annual pass as it usually only costs about the equivalent of two days' worth of tickets. This will allow you to not only save cash but also to relax and not feel that you need to spend all day at the park to get your money's worth.

7. Take a shuttle from the airport to your hotel if possible. It may take a bit longer to get to your hotel and you'll be sharing with other travelers, but it's kind of fun and you may make a friend of two. It's also much cheaper than a taxi.

8. When traveling on the interstate and looking for a place to stay overnight, steer clear of the new franchise hotels if you want to save. Instead, try the mom-and-pop hotels on the old highways near the interstate that the interstate replaced years ago, or even a bed and breakfast.

9. If visiting a water park, check on their "twilight" pricing. Usually if you go later in the day you save a substantial amount off the entrance fee.

10. Consider vacation packages. All-inclusive deals that bundle air, hotel, and entertainment are often cheaper than buying everything separately. These are sometimes outstanding values for the money.

11. Sign up for email alerts from the online travel agencies. These will let you know when airfare falls below a certain point so you can quickly jump on the deal and secure your tickets.

12. Book early or book late. If you aren't able to book your airfare tickets well in advance, you might score a great deal by waiting till the very last minute. Since airlines want to fill all their seats, they will oftentimes discount heavily at the last minute just to get those seats filled.

13. Have a "staycation." Stay home and save money on hotel, airfare, and car rental, and enjoy the touristy places in your area that you never have time to explore normally. You'll be surprised what's in your own backyard.

The 4 Best Travel Items For a Budget Hotel Stay

By Chris Linch

So, your home is worth half it's value from last year, you're worried about your job and your 401K is tanking, but you still need to take a vacation or you'll go nuts. You got a great deal on plane tickets and can't wait to feel the hot sun on your face. You just wish you could find a cheaper hotel without worrying about the quality or cleanliness.

Why pay through the nose for a ritzy lobby and a flat screen TV when after all, all you're really going to do in the hotel is sleep, well maybe not ALL. I'm not saying you should choose the hotel with the chalk outline in the hallway and the exterminator van parked outside, but in my experience, most hotels are pretty much equal. Price does not determine cleanliness or satisfaction. The $70 a night room can be just as satisfying as the $270 a night room, even more so when you factor in the cost. Ask yourself this, "what do I really need from my hotel?"

If you're like me you need 3 things, a clean comfy bed, a clean bathroom, a descent TV for those down times, that's it. Good location ? Helps, but it's not a pre-requisite. A good restaurant ? If you're eating in the hotel restaurant maybe you should stay home. Do you really need that frilly duvet cover and selection of designer teas. Here's what I do to save my bucks for pina colada's instead of some fancy expensive hotel that just ends up not even being as good as the one half the price.

THE most important item for saving money is a travel sheet. This product will enable you to peacefully enjoy any bed without the trepidation of unclean bedding. A Travel sheet will cover the bed and pillow so you get peace of mind. Nothing will ruin a hotel stay faster than dubious bedding, and even if the sheets seem alright, that blanket or bedspread, no matter where you stay, is not very clean. I have experienced unchanged and dirty bedding in some very fine hotels. Conversely, some of the cleanest and most comfortable hotel beds I have slept in have been in budget hotels like Hampton Inn. So use a travel sheet, especially if you are sensitive to detergents or allergens like dust mites.

The next item is a sound generator. This is a small, alarm clock sized gizmo that produces a range of sounds like white noise or rain showers or waves. The one I use I bought at Brookstone for 25 bucks, it works great on 3 AA batteries. So many times I have stayed in a hotel in a big city like New York, and have been kept awake by outside sounds from traffic or sirens or that refrigerator cycling on and off. With an inexpensive sound generator, I sleep like a baby. Perfect for the hotel off the beaten path or to close to the beaten path.

Clorox wipes, you heard me, Clorox wipes. A small pack of these babies will transform any moderately maintained hotel room and bathroom into a something you could perform minor surgery in. Wipe down all hard surfaces and the TV remote. Take some time and reap a healthy vacation free of those pesky colds so frequently picked up while away.

Last but not least, PROMO COUPONS. Once you have found a few hotel choices, then search the web for promotional coupons for that hotel chain or specific hotel. Membership discounts, promo codes and coupons are abundant, especially in the off season. Search thoroughly and compare which coupon gives the biggest bang for the buck. Some are percentage based, 10 or 20 percent savings off the price of the room, others are upgrades or service based, free meals, spa service etc. You would be very surprised at how much you can save with just a 20 minute investment of your time.

These 4 items will enable you to squeeze every last drop of value from your hard earned travel dollar by enabling you to comfortably stay at a budget hotel.

What Consumers Look for In Trade Shows

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

As a buyer I always see to it that I am deeply satisfied with every purchase. I always go to craft fairs where I can find unique and useful things for my own use. I also love giving away such items as presents and gifts to my friends, relatives and colleagues. They always admire these unique finds that I sourced out from craft fairs. It is very ideal to give away because its not pricey thus, would not make a huge indent on my pocket.

As a responsible consumer I always prepare well before any purchase. Before going out, I already have in mind the things that I need to buy in order to save time and effort. It is always wise to have a vision of the product that I want before going to a fair. In this case, I would be spared of the necessary impulse purchases that sometimes happen to shoppers like me.

First important aspect I look for in a product is its quality. I really dont mind spending more on an item which I deemed has the better or the best quality among its contemporaries.

Second, I must admit that having a good relationship with the seller is an important factor for me. There are times that I was able to buy stuff only because the seller was very accommodating and courteous all the time. She provided me with excellent information about the product and her way of dealing with respect ultimately had me to buy one of her products. It is true that hospitality can win you customers. A conscientious and honest business person can sure gain many customers from her good attitude.

These are mostly the things that consumers like me look for in trade shows. This may be helpful for people who are thinking of establishing a business in the craft fairs industry.

Most people dream about moving to an island their whole life and living in paradise. If people look closely at their dream of moving to Hawaii, it can become a reality with little time and hard work.

Shipping Your Furniture

Looking up possible companies to ship your stuff to the island is one of the first things that you should start doing. This way you can conduct thorough research and know what you should expect to pay and how long it will take for everything to arrive.

Something to consider when moving that far is whether or not you really need all of the furniture and stuff he the accumulated over the years, or whether it might be a better idea to have a garage sale and save on the shipping charges. Keep in mind that real estate in Hawaii can be more expensive in many areas in the continental US so you may be living in a smaller place, but it would certainly be worth it to live in paradise.

Working in Hawaii

The next big step that you want to look at closely is how to find work in your new home. The great thing about this tropical paradise is like any other city that has many jobs and many different needs to be filled. Most likely whatever type of work you do currently can be done on one of the islands, but having a little flexibility or being willing to expand your work needs into a new direction will make it easier to find a new job in Hawaii.

If you have any experience in resort services, restaurant work, or bartending then you will find that the transition to Hawaii can be very easy as it is such a large tourism area there are bound to be jobs in those fields. If you are looking for other work that is more specific or less easy to find in those positions might be a good way to get started they are while searching for something closer to your dream job.

Start Moving

Now that you know which companies ship to Hawaii and where there is work to be found the only thing left is to stop postponing and make the move. Don't just sit around dreaming about what you would like to do, take action and belief your dream.

Del Mar - Wonderland Of Sunshine On The Pacific Ocean

By Carlos Hunnefeld

Can you imagine a sun-filled vacation getaway to a quiet, scenic town on the endless Pacific Ocean? This paradise has charming hotels and inns, unbelievable restaurants and absolutely gorgeous beaches. If this sounds good to you, know that those elements are all available in the lovely town of Del Mar, California.

Del Mar is Spanish for "by the sea" because it's located right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Del Mar is said by some to be at once the most charming and the most romantic resort beach town anywhere in the world. Here in Del Mar you'll find clean beaches, world-class restaurants, marvelous hiking trails, romantic bed and breakfasts, exotic vacation options, delightful beaches, awesome jogging/hiking trails and a world famous horse racing track

Del Mar has been home to Hollywood celebrities starting in the 1940's. Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante made the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club become one of the most famous and prestigious horse racing organizations in the entire world. Angie Dickenson and Burt Bacharach purchased residences in Del Mar. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez were regulars at the track and at Del Mar's restaurants. Brad Pitt recently purchased a home here in Del Mar - an $18 million dollar beachfront home - so now Brad sightings are the new talk of the town.

Del Mar isn't very large, just two square miles along the Northern San Diego County coast between Solana Beach on the north and Torrey Pines State Reserve on the south. Del Mar has a population of 4000 to 5000 Del-Marians (depending on who is counting) who live among the beautiful sandstone canyons interspersed with hillsides or perched on bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, all of them enjoying beautiful sunsets.

Del Mar is home to the endangered Torrey Pine, the rarest species of pine tree in the United States. Only two populations of this endangered species exist - one in Torrey Pines State Reserve the other in Del Mar proper.

Each summer Del Mar plays host to the San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The fair originally opened in 1936, the site selected because it was the perfect spot just off the main highways - while still being near the ocean's cooling breezes on hot summer days. Selection of a fair queen - Fairest of the Fair - is still a fail highlight each summer.

Bing Crosby took a leading role in helping make the now-world-famous Del Mar Race Track a reality. On July 3, 1937, the Del Mar Race Track opened. Newspapers called the track "Bing's Baby". In 1938 Bing recorded a song that would open and close every day of racing since those early days - Where The Turf Meets the Surf.

Five Tips to Better Travel

We asked the busiest traveler we could find, John Storey, worldwide director of public relations for Lacoste, for ways any man, woman, or child could improve the quality of their transit.

1. If you fly regularly, make friends with the premium-services director at your local airport. He or she can make things happen for you in a pinch.
2. If you pay full fare for any flight, demand a paper ticket. In case of any problems or delays, you can get your paper ticket endorsed and transferred to another carrier.
3. If you ever have to switch planes in the UK, do not carry on more than one bag. When you touch down, they will make you go through immigration in order to check in again.
4. If you travel with extra luggage or sporting equipment, British Airways allows each passenger a piece of sporting equipment in addition to his luggage allowance.
5. Don't try to bluff your way into an upgrade. They are not free, and you will just look ignorant. The best way to get an upgrade is to always fly the same airline.

California's First City

By James Gilbert Pynn

Monterey enjoys a veritable trove of historic monuments with regards to California's past. The scenic city has seen many firsts in California's rich, wild history. It was home to California's first theater, first brick building, first school, and was in fact the state's first city. The city has been home to Native Americans, Spanish conquistadors, Mexican officials, and finally, American settlers. In addition to its history, the city has been home to number of significant artists and writers, as well as its own brand of cheese.

Naturally, and perhaps ironically, Monterey was once famous for its heavily trafficked fishery. Nestled on the sleepy central Californian coast, Monterey is renown throughout the United States for the diversity and abundance of marine wildlife. To be sure, the Native American Ohlone tribe subsisted for generations on the plentiful marine life in the Peninsula.

As is the case with California, the first European settlers in the area were Spanish. In 1770, Father Junipero Serra and Gaspar de Portola were given control of the region by the Spanish crown and, as a result, Monterey served as the capital of both Spanish and Mexican California from 1777 to 1849. It was not until the Mexican-American War that the United States took control of the region and the capitol moved to Sacramento.

Though Cannery Row was once famous as fishing and canning center, it has since been preserved as a tourist attraction when the fishing industry collapsed due to over-fishing in the mid-Fifties. The area is now replete with gentrified cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. Ironically, the main attraction on the Row is still fish, but now in the form of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Prospective visitors are encouraged to research the array of accommodating Monterey hotels and come visit. A number of American and international artists and writers have been drawn to the city because of its scenic qualities. The list of resident painters includes Percy Gray, Rowena Meeks, Xavier Martinez, and Arthur Frank Mathews. The list of writers is equally impressive. At one time or another the following writer called Monterey home: John Steinbeck, Robert Heinlein, Henry Miller, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
